In the early 1900s, drapery was used to control the temperature in homes. People would make wool drapes that hung to the floor to help hold the heat in the home. Heavy drapes were also hung in doorways to keep a room warmer.
Many people place heavy drapes in their bedroom to block sunlight from entering their room. People who work nights will use drapery to make their bedrooms dark in order to sleep during the day.
Drapes are also used to give the home owner privacy from people passing by. When the drapes are pulled shut, people are unable to see into the window. Sheers were made with this use in mind. A sheer is a loosely woven fabric, which allows the person inside the home to look out, while others on the outside can not see in. It also allows light into a room.
Heavy drapes are used as curtains on a theatrical stage. They conceal the actors from the audience. It also helps to control the acoustics of music and sound in a large room. Many times, a room such as a hall or auditorium will hang drapes just to have better acoustics in the room.
Drapes can add color and elegance to anyone's home or business. Many businesses, hotels, motels, and restaurants use a type of drapery on their windows just for looks.
Today, we have a huge selection of drapes to choose from, such as blinds, curtains, sheers, shags, valances, shutters, and drapes. They come in all different colors, textures and weights of fabric. We decide what the drapery will be used for, and then select the style and weight to match our needs.
