Tips for Adding Daperies

Many things need to be considered when adding draperies to any home. One must consider drapery designs, window treatments, hardware, fabric, accessories, styles and applications. So where to begin on your special drapery project?

Choosing the right fabric should be your first step. The fiber content in the fabric is very important. The fabric that has more cotton is usually ideal. Polyester is not a great choice in fabric. You should always consider cottons or wools.

How bright or dark do you like your room? Picking the lining should come second. Thermal suede lining is the best one to use. This lining lets light in but blocks most of the heat from entering the house. You may use a second lining that is called interlining if you find it is necessary. Blackout lining is also a good idea. It blocks out all light and heat. Since it is stiffer than the others it may cause the treatment to hang improperly, but if you enjoy a dark room while the drapes are closed, this is the best choice for you.

Hanging up the hardware comes next. Hardware for the draperies must be put at a minimum of four to six inches above the window frame. You must also extend it a minimum of four to five inches on the sides. Make sure the draperies are at least half to one inch off the floor. This simply prevents energy from leaking around the drapery. It also makes your windows appear larger. If there is more than one window in the room, make sure you hang all the draperies at the same height.
