One of the first things one must consider when trying to decide on window treatments, is to determine what fabric and style to use. Do you want a heavy fabric like a brocade or tapestry? Perhaps you want the light, airy look of voile or chiffon. You can even settle on an in-between like Broadcloth or Chintz.

This will all depend of whether you have a Victorian, Traditional or Contemporary style of room. You will also want it to tie-in with the rooms that are adjacent to the room you are designing with draperies. Then there are the trims. Do you want heavy trim or a beaded trim? Do you want a tailored look or a feminine touch?

After you have decided exactly what style you want to go with, you have a few more decisions to make. For example, do you want sheers behind your drapes or curtains? If you do, then you will need to get a double rod to accommodate them. These can be found at local stores.

Sometimes there are handy resources in your own town or close by, like Lowes or Home Depot. They often carry books or booklets on the hardware you are going to need.
